Our Focuses

Reducing Waste

Have you ever realized how full the yellow compost buckets are in the dining hall? Or, the overflowing food waste and garbage in the bins across our campus. Our goal is to manage the amount of garbage produced on campus but especially in Marion Hall...

Waste Sorting

Sustainable practices are current goals within Shawnigan Lake School, including the process of waste sorting. Because our waste is sent off-site to a plant in Washington, it is important to make sure our recyclables, returnables, compost, and garbage are separated into...

Reusables

Reducing the amount of plastic in our garbage means taking a deeper look at where it all comes from and then taking action to eliminate it. During the course of this school year, and other school years to come, our goal is to implement a reusable cup system for use at Dukes and Stag...

 Energy Usage

Our Mission

In response to the growing concern surrounding the school's environmental impact and outlook, Shawnigan's first environmental council has formed. The Sustainability Council was established with the sole goal of protecting our community's environment and advancing our school's sustainability goals. Having strong environmental goals and achievable green objectives establishes us as role models amongst other esteemed educational institutions.

The council is organized into four subgroups that have independent focuses involving issues surrounding sustainability at our school. The four current focuses are reducing waste, waste sorting, reusables, and energy usage. The council will continue to work on and accomplish our outlined focuses through a close working relationship with the 360 Eco-Ninjas and with the continued support from our student body and faculty. Only we can create a sustainable future for our campus, our community, and our planet.
