Reducing Our On-Campus Waste

Have you ever realized how full the yellow compost buckets are in the dining hall? Or, the overflowing food waste and garbage in the bins across our campus. Our goal is to manage the amount of garbage produced on campus but especially in Marion Hall where we have seen a huge spike in food waste. In order to minimize our waste, we will be taking on several initiatives that we believe will help us accomplish this goal.

The implementation of a survey will allow the kitchen staff to create a menu that will be preferable to those who eat in Marion. When the kitchen serves a popular meal among the students, there is a visible shift in the amount of food waste produced, so this survey would allow the kitchen staff to skip the less popular meals and therefore reduce food waste. Along with this, we would like to minimize the packaging of things such as syrup packets and tea bags, and other one-time-use products from the tables. This is only a beginning, and we know that it is impossible to accomplish this goal on our own--we need your help,! From now on and for the years to come, your small contribution to food conservation and waste reduction can make a huge impact on our campus, community, and even the world.

Lakes

Growing up in a big city in China, I have always seen overflowing garbage cans and food waste on the streets--it seemed to me that there weren't enough garbage bins in the world that could hide all our waste. For that reason, I am driven with compassion and environmental awareness to contribute to the local community and here on campus, minimizing food waste and garbage disposal overall. For one day in the future, I hope that I will aid my city with waste reduction and promote environmental consciousness.

My name is Raphael and I’m from Vancouver. Coming to Shawnigan Lake School made me realize how much waste can be produced, even in a smaller community. I am determined to find solutions to reduce waste and create a more sustainable system for our school.

I joined the sustainability council, with the hope of starting a conversation with my fellow students about the way we manage our waste at the school. Some of my goals for this school year are to reduce the amount of waste that Shawnigan produces not only this year but also long term. I hope to create a lasting impact on the school and on the environment.
