Managing Our Energy Consumption

First and foremost, Improving our management of energy usage throughout the school is a top priority. We strive to see energy used at Shawnigan to be derived from self-sustainable sources which can be implemented on campus. We would like to see the school's primary energy source be more sustainable and we would like to find ways to use less energy as a school in as many aspects as possible. We want to push for Shawnigan’s overall energy usage to be lowered through campaigns and widespread usage cutbacks from students and faculty.

To accomplish these goals we have a dual-fanged approach. The first aspect of how we’re going to affect the changes that we are working towards is to use energy consumption data collected from around campus. We want to take this data and analyze it to understand which devices on campus are inefficiently using energy. Then after identifying the issue, we can begin to implement solutions. The second aspect of our plan is to then develop a renewable energy system that is compatible with our campus’s landscape. This would allow us to begin to generate power on campus and to moving towards energy self-sustainability. Based on the initial research we’ve done, based on the school's dimensions, hydroelectric power would be ideal; and therefore, we would like to attempt to both purchase and install a small hydroelectric power generator on campus.  By doing this, not only will it make Shawnigan more sustainable, it will help educate our students on environmental sustainability and the effects of energy consumption.

Meet The Energy Team

Co-Head of School

I want to leave behind a legacy that educates students on the importance of environmental sustainability. I hope this year the community of Shawnigan gains a greater awareness of the dire state our planet is in and how we as students can create a positive impact.

I think it's important to take care of our earth because it's the only planet we have. I want to help make our school more sustainable and put plans in place for future generations to be able to take care of our school and to take care of our planet. I can't wait to help improve our school in the coming years.

Dominic Skelcher

Co-Head of School

When I leave shawnigan, I want it to be just a little bit better. Our natural environment is such a beautiful part of our school, and I think it is often too overlooked. I want to grow our respect for this aspect of our community. My dream is to leave a legacy of torch bearing where actions I take this year can inspire all of those who take up this role afterward.
