Promoting Waste Sorting

Sustainable practices are current goals within Shawnigan Lake School, including the process of waste sorting. Because our waste is sent off-site to a plant in Washington, it is important to make sure our recyclables, returnables, compost, and garbage are separated into those specific categories to implement the reduce, reuse, and recycle process. Our overall goal this school year is to encourage a cleaner waste sorting system to make it easier for others to dispose of their waste responsibly within each house, building, and outdoor public space. As this is the first year of the Sustainability Council at SLS, the Waste Management group is hoping to create a withstanding and long-term solution for the overall waste management of the school by collaborating with other students, staff, and Shawnigan alumni to create change. With more years to come, we hope that we can set a greener path for the future of Shawnigan.

Furious shouts, stomping feet, raging horns, unified chants- these are the sounds of a climate strike. Before the pandemic, hundreds of members of my community gathered in the small town square of Duncan, holding signs scribbled with blue and green and red: the colours of today’s planet Earth. I felt a part of a group that had the same determination to make positive change, and hopefully, by being a part of Shawnigan’s Sustainability Council, I can bring the same feeling to others.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong, where waste management is a pertinent issue. Much of Hong Kong's waste, including some recyclables and compost end up in landfills, this is partly due to the lack of education surrounding waste management. I now want to contribute to Shawnigan's waste management system. I am excited to contribute to Shawnigan's sustainable future and I look forward to working with members of the community to achieve our committee's goals.

I am passionate about the waste sorting issue at our school. I like to clean up garbage in my spare time.
